The Island of Coconuts and Thread

Keelie arrives at the beautiful and isolated San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama on a sailboat with her father and step-mother. When her father leaves to obtain materials to repair the boat’s damaged hull and her step-mother falls seriously ill, Keelie is invited to live on the island with the Kuna Indians. Her friendship with an Indian girl flourishes until she learns they have contracted a contagious skin disease.  She fears that she brought the illness to the island while she struggles with her own fate. This fact-based middle grade novel features the Kuna Indians, one of the most fascinating tribes in the world.
